Sigiriya Tour

Sigiriya Tour

per person

Sigiriya, often referred to as the “Lion Rock,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic and historically significant attractions in Sri Lanka. It is known for its ancient rock fortress, dramatic landscape, and remarkable frescoes. The highlight of any Sigiriya tour is the ascent to the summit of Lion Rock. The rock rises 200 meters above the surrounding landscape and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. To reach the top, you’ll need to climb a series of steep stairs and walk through terraced gardens and moats. The climb can be challenging, but the panoramic views are well worth the effort. On your way to the summit, you’ll encounter the famous Sigiriya frescoes, which are ancient paintings of beautiful maidens believed to be celestial beings. These frescoes are located on a sheltered rock face and provide a unique glimpse into the artistic and cultural heritage of the region. It’s advisable to visit Sigiriya early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. The morning light is especially great for photography.

The site dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD), who chose this site as his new capital. Sigiriya Rock is the number one tourist attraction in Sri Lanka and the main reason most tourists travel to Sigiriya. But it was another adventure that captivated me during our stay in Sigiriya. In fact, many other travelers I spoke to also agreed that Sigiriya Rock was great but it was Pidurangala Rock that was the more memorable experience when it comes to listing their favorite places to visit in Sri Lanka.

Amongst its serene, tranquil beautiful forest and bolder-clad environs, we find some of the earliest examples of Sinhalese hydraulic civilization in Mihintale. The monastic establishment brought about an ideal motive for the development of an impressive network of irrigation channels with the use of both natural and artificial ponds and waterways.
